Accomplishments

Accomplishments include acquiring and managing land in Pal Mar, providing the impetus to acquire the Hobe Sound Scrub Preserve now under County management, acquiring and preserving Simpson’s “Spoil” Island in the Indian River Lagoon at Sailfish Point, partnering with FPL to re-open and preserve the environmental jewel Barley Barber Swamp, and partnering to acquire the nearly 250 acre Loxa-Lucie Headwaters Initiative preserve. We are currently at work on two multi-million dollar valued properties vital to the health of the Loxahatchee River watershed encompassing nearly 12 acres.

Barley Barber Swamp

Located near Indiantown in Western Martin County, the Barley Barber Swamp is teeming with plant and wildlife species-most notably, its bald cypress trees, including one of the largest in the United States. Though it was closed due to hurricane damage it may open again so the public can enjoy and follow a meandering boardwalk to explore the pristine, freshwater wetland, and absorb the beauty of the unique ecological treasure that is the Barley Barber Swamp.

Strategic Vision & Mission

TLF’s Vision is to: “Keep our Treasured Martin County special by permanently safeguarding natural land and water resources.”

Embracing author Patrick Smith’s inspiration, our mission, “For the love of the land!” is to serve as Martin County’s only not-for-profit land trust (since 2008), to: Maintain “the Martin County Difference” through strategic partnerships, community engagement, and proven conservation tools such as land trusts to build upon a protected wildlife network and improved water resources.
